A Reflection by Canon Alistair Macdonald-Radcliff for the Grosvenor Chapel in the Parish of Mayfair,
for the Feast of St Thomas the Apostle, remembering also St Elizabeth Queen of Portugal and the distinguished ecclesiastics of the Venn family.
The music comprises the Agnus Dei from the Missa “Delectus Meus” by the Portuguese composer Filipe de Magalhães
A setting of Psalm 149 O Praise ye the Lord by Thomas Hanforth of Sheffield Cathedral
The anthem Laudibus in sanctis by William Byrd, with words in a paraphrase of Psalm 150
Laudibus in sanctis Dominum celebrate supremum,
Firmamenta sonent inclita facta Dei.
Inclita facta Dei cantate, sacraque potentis
Voce potestatem saepe sonate manus…..
Celebrate the Lord most high in holy praises:
Let the firmament echo the glorious deeds of God.
Sing ye the glorious deeds of God, and with holy voice
Sound forth oft the power of his mighty hand…..
The reflection ends with the processional Hymn:
For all the Saints, who from their labour rest
by the Rt. Revd. William Walsham How (1864)
to the tune: Sine Nomine, composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1906.
