If we but paused for a moment to consider attentively what takes place in Holy Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood, I am sure that the thought of Christ’s love for us would transform the coldness of our hearts into a fire of love and gratitude. – St. Angela of Foligno It is a memorial. But what good is a memorial if the substance of the matter is not enfleshed in us? The substance of the matter is to do the will of the Father. The Substance of the matter is to actualize that potentiality though the Holy Spirit. The substance of the matter is for Christ to assimilate us to His Body and Blood, making us very members incorporate in His mystical Body, which it the blessed company of all faithful people, and also heirs through hope of HIs everlasting Kingdom. (BCP, 83) Symbolism is convenient for those who never intend that the matter of Christ should indwell them because they fear what manner of havoc Christ might wreak in their lives. What we ought to desire to ingest this matter of Jesus, -God’s Word that longs to made flesh in our flesh.
