The Prayer Book’s 2017 conference was held on the theme: Anglicanism: Catholic and Reformed – Revisiting the Reformation Legacy 1517-2017.
It took place at St John’s Church, Savannah, Georgia, from midday on Thursday 16th to midday Saturday 18th, February 2017.
In the anniversary year of Luther’s ninety-five theses which started the Reformation, this conference explored how Anglicanism emerged with an identity that is both truly reformed and enduringly catholic.
And we are pleased to announce that audio of the presentations is being progressively made available while a collected print edition will also be published in due course.
Papers were presented by
Dr. Gillis Harp, Professor of History, Grove City College, PA who addressed the Historic Streams that shaped and emerged from the Reformation.
Dr. Oliver O’Donovan (Professor of Christian Ethics Edinburgh University and formerly Regius Professor of Moral Theology and Canon of Christ Church Oxford) addressed the theme of Sanctification, and also preached at the Conference Festal Evensong.
The Revd. Fr. Gavin Dunbar, President of the PBS USA, Rector of St. John’s Savannah, discussed The Nature and Future of the Reformation liturgy.
Dr Joan Lockwood O’Donovan (Hon. Fellow in the School of Divinity, Edinburgh University) addressing the area of Public Authority of the Church in the Cranmerian Tradition
Dr. Neil Robertson, Professor of Philosophy at King’s College Halifax, spoke on The Elizabethan Settlement and the Drama of a Catholic Reformation.
Dr. Jesse Billett, Professor at Trinity College in the University of Toronto, discussed “The Holy Scriptures, or That Which Is Agreeable to the Same”:The Scriptural Catholicity of the Prayer Book.
The Revd. Dr. George Westhaver, Principal of Pusey House, Oxford addressed the topic of Incarnational Reading: A Tractarian View of the Authority of Scripture, and also preached at the closing Eucharist.
Dr. Paul Julienne, Professor University of Maryland & The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) emeritus, explored the topic of Apologetics Now, Science Faith and Contemporary Culture.
The Revd. Dr Arnold Klukas, Quondam Professor of Pastoral Theology and Liturgy, Nashotah House, addressed the continuing work being undertaken to produce a new Prayer Book in the classical Prayer Book tradition by ACNA.
It was with great regret that The Rt. Revd. Dr. Geoffrey Rowell former Bishop in Europe and previously Chaplain of Keble College Oxford had to withdraw from the conference owing to ill health. All those attending joined the members and board of the Prayer Book Society in extending their warmest good wishes and prayers for his full recovery,
