The Feast of St Dunstan - A reflection

by sinetortus

St Dunstan takes the Devil by the nose….

Canon Alistair Macdonald-Radcliff reflects upon the life of this 10th Century Archbishop of Canterbury and the way in which his biography later became hotly contested terrain,  used and interpreted in very different ways by polemicists of the Roman Catholic church as well as the High and Low church factions of the Church of England…

Psalm 149: Cantate Domino — Anglican chant by Thomas Hanforth (1867-1948)

O sing unto the LORD a new song; * let the congregation of saints praise him.
Let Israel rejoice in him that made him, * and let the children of Sion be joyful in their King.
Let them praise his Name in the dance: * let them sing praises unto him with tabret and harp.
For the LORD hath pleasure in his people, * and helpeth the meek-hearted.
Let the saints be joyful with glory; * let them rejoice in their beds.
Let the praises of God be in their mouth; * and a two-edged sword in their hands;
To be avenged of the nations, * and to rebuke the peoples;
To bind their kings in chains, * and their nobles with links of iron;
To execute judgment upon them; as it is written, * such honor have all his saints.
GLORIA PATRI

O quam gloriosum — Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611)

O quam gloriosum est regnum, in quo cum Christo gaudent omnes Sancti! Amicti stolis albis, sequuntur Agnum, quocumque ierit.

O, how glorious is the kingdom, in which all the saints rejoice with Christ! Arrayed in white robes, they follow the Lamb, wherever He goes.

(All Saints, Second Vespers, Antiphon to the Magnificat – cf. Revelation 7:9)
