In recent days, as we follow the Church Calendar through the Festal season of Easter we have had occasion to think quite a bit about the early church in North Africa, with Cyril of Carthage coming up in my last reflection, as he grappled so heroically with the twin challenges of enduring a terrible plague on the one hand and a persecution by the Pagan Roman state on the other –which eventually claimed his life as a Martyr

Just this last Saturday was the Feast of St Athanasius of Alexandria,

 and today, in the Western church calendar, we are invited to remember St Monica the mother of Augustine of Hippo

She was born in the year 332 in Tagaste, North Africa (modern-day Souk Ahras, in Algeria)…..
